Overview

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the abdomen.

During a tummy tuck — also known as abdominoplasty — excess skin and fat are removed from the abdomen. Connective tissue in the abdomen (fascia) usually is tightened with sutures as well. The remaining skin is then repositioned to create a more toned look.

You might choose to have a tummy tuck if you have excess fat or skin around the area of your bellybutton or a weak lower abdominal wall. A tummy tuck can also boost your body image.

Why it’s done

There are a number of reasons you might have excess fat, poor elasticity of the skin or weakened connective tissue in your abdomen. These include:

  • Significant changes in weight
  • Pregnancy
  • Abdominal surgery, such as a C-section
  • Aging
  • Your natural body type

A tummy tuck can remove loose, excess skin and fat, and tighten weak fascia. A tummy tuck can also remove stretch marks and excess skin in the lower abdomen below the bellybutton. However, a tummy tuck won’t correct stretch marks outside of this area.

If you’ve previously had a C-section, your plastic surgeon might be able to incorporate your existing C-section scar into your tummy tuck scar.

A tummy tuck can also be done in combination with other body contouring cosmetic procedures, such as breast surgery. If you’ve had fat removed from your abdomen (liposuction), you may decide to have a tummy tuck because liposuction removes tissue just under the skin and fat but not any excess skin.

A tummy tuck isn’t for everyone. Your doctor might caution against a tummy tuck if you:

  • Plan to lose a significant amount of weight
  • Might consider future pregnancy
  • Have a severe chronic condition, such as heart disease or diabetes
  • Have a body mass index that’s greater than 30
  • Are a smoker
  • Had a previous abdominal surgery that caused significant scar tissue

Risks

A tummy tuck poses various risks, including:

  • Fluid accumulation beneath the skin (seroma). Drainage tubes left in place after surgery can help reduce the risk of excess fluid. Your doctor might also remove fluid after surgery using a needle and syringe.
  • Poor wound healing. Sometimes areas along the incision line heal poorly or begin to separate. You might be given antibiotics during and after surgery to prevent an infection.
  • Unexpected scarring. The incision scar from a tummy tuck is permanent, but is placed along the easily hidden bikini line. The length and visibility of the scar varies from person to person.
  • Tissue damage or death. During a tummy tuck, fatty tissue deep within your skin in the abdominal area might get damaged or die. Smoking increases this risk. Depending on the size of the area, tissue might heal on its own or require a surgical touch-up procedure.
  • Changes in skin sensation. During a tummy tuck, the repositioning of your abdominal tissues can affect the nerves in the abdominal area, and infrequently, in the upper thighs. You’ll likely feel some reduced sensation or numbness. This usually diminishes in the months after the procedure.

Like any other type of major surgery, a tummy tuck poses a risk of bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to anesthesia.

Before the procedure

There are a number of different procedures for a tummy tuck, depending on the extent of change you would like to see. During the typical tummy tuck, your plastic surgeon makes incisions to remove most of the skin and fat between your bellybutton and pubic hair in a horizontal oval or elliptical shape. Connective tissue (fascia) that lies over the abdominal muscles is then tightened with permanent sutures.

Your plastic surgeon will then reposition the skin around your bellybutton. Your bellybutton will be brought out through a small incision and sutured in its normal position. The incision from hip to hip above the pubic hair will be stitched together and will leave a scar that falls along the natural crease within the bikini line.

During the procedure you might be given an antibiotic to prevent infection.

The procedure typically takes about two to three hours.

FAQ
What is the average cost of a tummy tuck?
The average cost of a tummy tuck is $6,253, according to 2018 statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This average cost is only part of the total price – it does not include anesthesia, operating room facilities or other related expenses.
How do they do tummy tuck?
Complete abdominoplasty.
The surgeon will cut your abdomen from hipbone to hipbone and then contour the skin, tissue, and muscle as needed. The surgery will involve moving your belly button, and you may need drainage tubes under your skin for a few days.
How many sizes do you lose with a tummy tuck?
Most women drop 2 to 3 clothing sizes after a tummy tuck and assume a trimmer, more fit figure and a flatter, smoother abdomen. Some also experience a tremendous emotional boost and go on to lose even more weight.
Is it easier to lose weight after a tummy tuck?
The study showed that those who had more fat removed during their tummy tuck – sometimes via liposuction procedure – continued to lose weight after their surgery. The tummy tuck may help patients keep the weight off after their procedure, but it is not designed to reduce the fat on its own.
Do I need lipo or tummy tuck?
For patients with excess fat or stubborn pockets of fat with good skin tone and a flat abdominal wall, liposuction is the best treatment. Women after pregnancy can still be good candidates for only liposuction but more commonly the skin and abdominal wall is permanently stretched and is best improved with a tummy tuck.
Do I need a full or mini tummy tuck?
Mini tucks are ideal for people at normal body weight, with just a small, lower belly pooch. If you have excess fat, saggy skin above your belly button, or have lost a lot of weight and have a lot of excess skin, you'll need a full tummy tuck
Do you eat less after a tummy tuck?
A majority of patients during the study felt less hungry while also eating less after their tummy tuck procedure. In addition to feeling fuller faster after a tummy tuck, the study showed that patients who had more fat removed with liposuction during their procedure continued to lose weight.
How long after tummy tuck do you see results?
And while some of the tummy tuck result is immediate, it may take up to six months or more to see the final results of the liposuction. During that time, the swelling gradually resolves and some degree of skin tightening may occur leading to an even more dramatic result by year's end.
Can I get a six pack after tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck can create a new, flat abdomen by removing extra fat. This can be a great, life-changing procedure if you've been carrying extra fat around your stomach area and can't get rid of it. But, if you're looking for muscle tone or abs, a tummy tuck won't get you there. You need lipomodeling procedure/
What happens if you get pregnant after tummy tuck?
How Pregnancy Affects a Tummy Tuck. Medically speaking, a tummy tuck is a purely cosmetic procedure, so it does not affect a woman's ability to become pregnant. A healthy woman who is of child-bearing age should be able to get pregnant just as easily after a tummy tuck as she would before the surgery.
Operation
How should I prepare for a tummy tuck?
Get lab testing or a medical evaluation.
Take certain medications or adjust your current medications.
Stop smoking.
Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding.
Review your medical history. Be prepared to answer questions about current and past medical conditions. Talk about any medications you're taking or you have taken recently, as well as any surgeries you've had.
Discuss your expectations. Explain why you want a tummy tuck, and what you're hoping for in terms of appearance after the procedure.
Maintain a stable weight. Ideally, you'll maintain a stable weight for at least 12 months before having a tummy tuck.
Arrange for help during recovery. Make plans for someone to drive you home after you leave the hospital and stay with you for at least the first night of your recovery at home.

I first met Dr Ignatieva in December 2017 when she came to work at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham England. I know she came to this hospital because it is a big training hospital, as a result it gave her the opportunity to work daily on more complex/major procedures that patients needed, because this is the criteria of the type surgery this hospital undertakes, small less complicated surgery tends to be sent to other hospitals.

I discussed with her all the things I had wanted to change about my body for a number of years. For so many of us finding the right Dr in plastic surgery is always a daunting task, particularly as it’s a cosmetic desire to look how you imagine in your mind, for me it was based on finding an old photograph of many years ago! My concerns started with feeling comfortable to discuss what I want to achieve, comfortable and confident about the ability of the Dr I may choose if I decide to proceed, the realistic care recovery process in another country if I considered going outside the UK where I had heard prices are cheaper and knowing how expensive all these “wants” would be in the UK.

Dr Ignatieva made me feel at ease and invited me to visit her in Kiev Ukraine and to only have a consultation with her and her colleague, and suggested not to make any forward planned commitments before going away to think about what I wanted to do after the consultation. Knowing she had worked on some complicated/complex/major procedure’s it gave me the confidence to at least go to see her. I went to Kiev in February 2019 and made the decision to have a bust reduction/reconstruction done in May 2019, this was major surgery given I wanted to go from a GG to a C/D cup in bra size, from start to finish the whole process made me relaxed, I was monitored frequently to make sure everything was okay and 2 weeks later on my way back to the UK a very happy patient, within 4 months of my surgery I was back to doing all the fitness training I had been comfortable to do before I felt like “my breasts were getting in my way”.

I had set out at the beginning that I wanted 3 different procedures done, it was suggested to focus only on the major surgery in the beginning, my breast reduction/reconstruction, if I was happy with the result then was the right time to discuss the rest of my “wish list”, which was liposuction to removed fat from my back and upper arms plus skin removal from my upper arms to give a nice tight skin appearance once the fate was removed. Not only have I done extensive fitness training over previous years and cut back drastically during the past few years which took a toll on the appearance of my body with muscle turning to fat, I spend a lot of time in the sun, which is not good for the skin appearance other than getting a tan and at 61 years old my ageing skin was all going against me, hence the dreadful “bingo wings” had to be reduced to a more appealing look. I have had both of these procedures done in the past month, while I’m still coming out of the end of the FULL RECOVERY stage I already know I’m 100% happy with the end result, with little restriction within days of the surgery because it was not so invasive, but to treat my body with respect, all made possible by Dr Ignatieva who made it all stress-less by the care, consideration she showed me but more important her desire to “make my body back to beautiful”. I have achieved all what I wanted to achieve without spending a huge amount of money that the UK would have cost, despite the cost the procedures were carried out in wonderful surroundings with up to date modern technology.

I have since decided to return to have my eyelids done, on a date to be confirmed…

If you are thinking about plastic surgery I would have no hesitation to recommend you discussing what you want to achieve with this professional Doctor.

The goal of consultation is to arrange surgery details, express your expectations on surgery results and clear up your mind. Do not be afraid to ask questions concerning your decision even if you think it is not important.

Every patient is individual and copes with pain differently. Your stay in hospital should last about 1-3 days. It depends on the type of surgery performed and the patient operated. During the stay, you will be encouraged to walk in the ward. Day by day you will be allowed to return to your daily activities.
When should I expect to see the final result?
The final result is usually visible 6 months after the surgery. However, the full recovery time depends on the surgery and in some cases may take up to 1 year. Do you have scars after a tummy tuck?

Can I sleep on my side after lipo?

Immediately after liposuction, you will start draining profusely as soon as you next stand up. After 6-8 hours postoperatively you may lie flat, and sleep in any comfortable position.
When can I exercise after a tummy tuck?
Perform Light Cardiovascular Activity Soon After Surgery
Should your tummy tuck require tightening the abdominal muscles, as in most cases, it usually takes about 2 weeks before you will be able to begin light cardiovascular exercise. Again, it is important to consult with your doctor before beginning any activities
For the first six weeks after a tummy tuck, you'll need to be careful when moving around. You'll also need to avoid positions that strain your incision line — such as quickly bending at the waist — to prevent the reopening of the wound.
How long do you drain after lipo?
Fluid may drain from the cuts (incisions) for several days. The fluid will be bloody at first, but will turn clear in a few days. The area will probably be bruised and swollen for at least 10 to 14 days. You will be able to return to your normal activities as soon as you feel comfortable.
You'll likely feel moderate pain, which will be controlled by pain medication. It's normal to have swelling in the surgical area.
You'll wear a supportive abdominal garment (abdominal binder) for about six weeks after your tummy tuck. This helps prevent fluid buildup and provides abdominal support while you heal. Your doctor will explain how to care for your scar.
After a tummy tuck, your abdominal incision and bellybutton will likely be covered with surgical dressing. Small tubes might be placed along the incision site to drain any excess blood or fluid.
